Not every commission is a whole house. A timber pavilion, pool house, or guest barn can transform how a family lives on its land - and it carries exactly the same hand-cut joinery and engineering as our largest homes, on a shorter timeline.
The same craft, a smaller commission
Outbuildings are often where a relationship with our studio begins. A covered entertaining pavilion, a poolside structure, or a guest barn lets you experience our process - the selection, the joinery, the raising - without the multi-year arc of a full residence.
Because the frames are smaller, the timeline is shorter and the entry point gentler. The craft, though, is identical: hand-cut joints, pegged connections, and timber chosen for the way it will weather.
Built for the open air
Exposed structures live a harder life than a heated interior, so we favor naturally durable species - western red cedar and black locust - and detail every joint to shed water and breathe.
Open trusses, deep overhangs, and a frame that frames the view: a well-made pavilion feels less like a building than like a part of the landscape that was always meant to be there.

What is the smallest structure you will build?
We regularly build single pavilions and pool houses of a few hundred square feet. Below that, a freestanding entry such as a timber gateway or trellis can still be worth a conversation.
How long does a pavilion take?
From design to raising, a straightforward pavilion typically runs six to twelve months, most of it in design and fabrication. The raising itself is usually a matter of days.
Can an outbuilding match our existing home?
Yes - matching species, joinery style, and finish to an existing house is one of the most satisfying things we do, whether or not we built the original.
Do outbuildings need permits?
Almost always, and requirements vary by county and municipality. We handle the structural engineering and drawings your jurisdiction requires.
